Preview: Young Warriors looking to preserve win in Mauritius

Zimbabwe’s Young Warriors will be looking to preserve their two-goal advantage when they face Mauritius in the second leg of their Africa Cup of Nations Under-23 qualifier at the Côte d’Or National Sports Complex on Tuesday.

Marc Sánchez’s side travel to the island nation with a 2-0 advantage secured in the first leg at the National Sports Stadium last Wednesday.

David Chigwada opened the scoring in the 35th minute before Nisbert Muzenda doubled the lead in the 60th minute as Zimbabwe dominated the contest and restricted Mauritius to just one shot on target.

The Young Warriors now need to protect their advantage over the two legs, with Sánchez warning that the job is not yet complete.

Mauritius are expected to adopt a more attacking approach on home soil as they look to overturn the deficit, making concentration and defensive discipline crucial for Zimbabwe.

Sánchez has already stressed the need for his players to remain focused.

“We just hope to stage another good performance in Mauritius, most importantly to avoid conceding. One thing is, they will come at us, and we have to be ready for that,” the coach said.

Zimbabwe will, however, be without captain Corbin Mthunzi, who returned to his club Ipswich Town. Prince Ndlovu, Junior Meya and Kennedy Mupomba are also unavailable for the trip.

A draw or another victory would see the Young Warriors progress to the second round, where Mali await.

The match kicks off at 17:00 Zimbabwe time.
