Dynamos board chairman Bernard Marriott reveals club once considered appointing Wicknell Chivayo as executive chairman

Dynamos board chairman Bernard Marriott has revealed that the club once considered appointing the late businessman Wicknell Chivayo as its executive chairman.

Speaking in an interview with DJ Ollah at Chivayo’s funeral, Marriott said the proposal was discussed around eight years ago, when Philip Chiyangwa was leading ZIFA.

“We once considered to appoint Wicknell Chivayo as the executive chairman when ZIFA was still under the administration of Philip Chiyangwa.

“We delayed that appointment since he was already involved with the national team (as a benefactor).

“His death has affected the nation at large because of his goodwill. He was God-given, unlike other people.”

Chivayo, who died alongside his wife Lucy Muteke and three others in a helicopter crash near Marondera on 30 September, was widely known for his financial support of football.

At the time of his death, the late businessman had pledged to buy Dynamos a luxury team bus valued at around US$250,000.

His support for football extended beyond Dynamos, with Highlanders among the clubs to benefit significantly from his financial backing.
