CAF hits Zimbabwe with sanctions after chaos in match against DRC at NSS

CAF has sanctioned the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) following incidents that marred the Warriors’ 2-1 defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo at the National Sports Stadium on 28 September.

The continental football governing body has ordered Zimbabwe to play its next home international behind closed doors, while ZIFA has also been fined.

The sanction follows the death of a supporter at the stadium and a pitch invasion after the final whistle during the AFCON 2027 qualifier.

The incidents have raised concerns over stadium management, with the National Sports Stadium having only recently reopened for international football following extensive renovations.

The Warriors’ next home international, likely against Equatorial Guinea in the AFCON 2027 qualifiers, will therefore be played without supporters as part of the CAF sanction.

More details of the CAF ruling are expected to follow.
