CAPS United were eliminated from the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup after losing 3-1 on penalties to Hunters FC in a quarter-final clash played on Saturday at Rufaro Stadium.
The game had ended 2-2 in regulation time, with the Green Machine surrendering a two-goal advantage after conceding twice late in the match.
Ishmael Wadi opened the scoring in the eighth minute as CAPS United took an early lead. The forward netted another goal on the stroke of half-time to complete his first-half brace.
As the Harare giants looked to be easing towards victory, Terrence Dzvukamanja pulled one back for Hunters in the 75th minute.
Captain Ronald Pfumbidzai then scored a stoppage-time equaliser to force the game into a penalty shootout.
In the shootout, Hunters goalkeeper Brendon Mukuli was the hero of the day after saving three kicks as his side cruised into the semi-finals with a 3-1 penalty victory.
The result also extended Hunters’ dominance over CAPS United across all competitions.
Action continues on Sunday, with Blanket Mine FC taking on FC Platinum, Hardrock FC facing Herentals FC and Scottland FC meeting Bulawayo Chiefs.
